You found them on the trains of Manhattan or walking across 42nd street. They sipped coffee in New York Starbucks and hopped out of taxi cabs. They even chartered buses or flew across the country, all to be in the heart of one of the biggest nerd events of the year. I’m talking about cosplayers and they invaded New York City this weekend among the over two hundred thousand fans that came out for this year’s New York Comic Con. Everywhere you looked there was some fantastic fan creation, out to win awards at the multiple cosplay contests or just out for the fun of being seen. With cosplay getting more popular every year, there were amazing costumes around every corner, and I was on the loose trying to capture as many as possible.
So here are only some of the fabulous cosplayers from NYCC 2013. See if you spot your favorite characters!
Firefly’s always going to have great representation, but this Kaylee not only had the costume down perfectly—she had the attitude. And the shiny parasol! As the days went on her appearance became a bit infamous. Check out how she engineered her look and personality.
Fresh off her Tomb Raiding adventures, this Lara Croft looked ready to tackle the Comic Con lines. I really liked the make-shift bow and battle-wounds.
Anyone who grew up on Power Rangers would recognize this lady. The detail on this Rita costume is fantastic and doesn’t she just give off that ‘I will get you next time!’ attitude?
Now here’s a character you don’t see played often. Met up with this Misty Knight at the Women in Marvel panel, where she teamed up with…
…the awesome ladies of the Carol Corp! It’s all Captain Marvel, all the time, including…
…this great mother and daughter combination of Captain Marvel fans!
Speaking of mothers and daughters, this was a positively frightening combination to walk up on in the lobby. I wonder if taking a photo counts as blinking?
He might look closer to Carl’s age but this kid had all Rick attitude, right down to the zombie parts around his neck. He was hanging out at the Walking Dead Chop Shop, checking out the zombie makeup. Getting ready, just in case?
Another fandom that had tons of cosplay of all ages was the Avatar universe, and these Kyoshi warriors were two of the best I’d seen.
Scarlet Witch might be reimagined in the next Avengers film, but this cosplayer decided to go old school Wanda with her fantastic cosplay.
Speaking of old school, this gentleman maug took it back to Mel Brooks’ classic Spaceballs, right down to the milk bone box as Barf.
In the furry ear brigade, who could forget Ewoks? And human Ewoks too! I love the spiked purse, to remind people that Ewoks are deadly along with adorable?
Coming in as one of my favorite interpretations of costumes is this great Victorian Lady Thor. The hat even has little wings, and Mjolnir never looked so fashionable.
What do you say about one of the best looking Gambit costumes I’ve ever seen? Forget Taylor Kitch: next time, let this guy play Gambit in the Wolverine movie!
No doubt about it, Xena had one of the best detailed costumes, down to the scrollwork on the armor and the gorgeous chakrum.
“Honey, I don’t know if we survived the attack… but you and Junior can join me in slaughtering all of Westeros now!”
Waiting on line for a Marvel signing I ran across this killer Bishop costume. That is a terrifyingly big gun, but it wouldn’t be Bishop without it.
Continuing the X-Men streak we’ve got this phenomenal Dark Phoenix. Who needs the Phoenix Five when you have classic destruction incarnate?
This costume made my nerdy heart happy with a fantastic Ruffio from Hook!
Frank Castle has nothing on her—Lady Punisher’s on the case.
Lady Loki—Tom Hiddleston might have the movie locked down, but this is a great rendition of the Trickster God we know and love.

No wait, I take it back. Also this cosplayer was the keeper of the best Joker impression I’d ever heard. Sent shivers clear down my spine when he laughed!
Nick Fury’s clearly on the case to secure the Tesseract, and he’s got some help from Luke Cage and Black Widow.
He might be trying to look innocent, but anyone who knows Hellblazer knows that John Constantine is anything but innocent.
Suddenly Seymour was standing in front of me—along with an Audrey and Audrey II. The mouth even moved on the plant!
This was one of two amazing Moxxi’s that I ran across, battling Borderlands characters out in the lobby. My favorite detail? The coat in the back stays flipped up.

There are few things more badass then a tiny Black Canary going after someone with a good, old-fashioned Canary Cry. And who is she fighting?
A smiley Elektra! She might look so cheerful because she likes her odds in this fight. Though I’m sure her mom wouldn’t like her stabbing her sister.
And rounding out the gallery, Wolverine is on the loose… and his dad, Deadpool, is trying to keep him contained. Good luck there, DeadDad!
